September 18th, 2008 Photoshop and drawingtablet This is yet another entry for Akeli's concept art contest. It's a temple, based on our ancient Greek versions. I know Akeli didn't say that there is a Greek-type culture in Guardians, but there is a Roman-type culture. In reality the Romans borrowed a LOT of elements from Greek art and architecture, so I figured it would be ok to use the Greeks as inspiration for this contest. This temple, like most of its ancient Greek counterparts, comes complete with its own Oracle; a blindfolded young lady with the power to foretell the future. Pilgrims come from all over the world to consult her. The temple is not located in the middle of a large city, as would have been the case with Roman temples, but can be found in an inhospitable mountain range, near the sea. The Greeks liked putting their temples in remote locations... Fun fact: Nowadays we admire ancient Greek and Roman art for its use of bare white marble in buildings and sculptures. However, most people don't know that the Greeks and the Romans didn't actually intend their work to be bare like this. In ancient times, the buildings and sculptures would have been painted in gaudy colors; blue, red, green, black and white. Over time these layers of paint got worn away by the elements, leaving the works of art bare and white, as we know them today. |
