Wesley has had a perpetual frown on his face ever since his hairline started receding at age 15. Not much is known about this young man, except for that fact that he is a very intelligent trainer, who likes to use lots of different strategies and tactics on his opponents to confuse them. He relies both on his Pokémon's power and on his own intelligence in battles, and years of experience have made Wesley quite an arrogant little jerk. He doesn't like to lose either, so he won't shy from cheating every now and then, but he does have his principles.

All this doesn't necessarily make him a bad person. Wes has had a rather rough past. He experienced disappointments and currently struggles with his father's public discreditment and consequent unemployment. His father was accused of collaborating with the now defunct Team Rocket. Wesley also harbors a particular grudge against Sandy, which does not only have to do with her failing to defend her championship title. It seems he ran into her when he was younger, and the experience did not go well for him. He won't really talk about it, not even with his friends, Nick and Gordon.

His reasons for joining the Pokémon fan club are unknown, though it may simply have been out of boredom. Wesley actually seems annoyed and at times embarrassed by the club's activities.

Back when Wesley was still 11 years old, he received his first Pokémon, Cyndaquil. Cyndaquil was a frivolous and outgoing Pokémon, with a knack for getting himself (and his trainer) into trouble. However, Cyndaquil was devoted to Wesley, so he always tried hard to please him.

After undergoing rigorous training, Cyndaquil evolved into Quilava and became quite a competent battler. Since his evolution, Quilava has lost most of his spontaneity. Instead, he'll come over quite solemn and even arrogant during battles. He may have copied this disposition from Wesley. And just like his trainer, Quilava hates to lose and he will do anything to prevent being beaten.
However, outside of battles, Quilava will sometimes still display his true, more curious nature. He is also quite fond of Nick and her Pidgeotto.

Quilava is quite a large specimen for his species.

Wesley caught Darmani when he was still a young Geodude on Mount Moon. Darmani proved to be a powerful asset, as his battling style is unlike that of Wesley's first Pokémon, Quilava. Where Quilava is quick and agile, Darmani is extremely powerful, but rather slow (even though he is quite fast as far as Golems go). When Wesley trained Quilava and Darmani, he mainly focused his energy on Darmani, which is why this Pokémon eventually became stronger than Quilava.
Darmani is not particularly smart, and prefers to rely on others to call the shots. This is why he'll obey orders blindly. In battles, he may come over as a psychopathic drone, but in reality Darmani is only following instructions. Outside of battle, the big guy is actually a very good-natured, jolly Pokémon. He's very protective of people and Pokémon he considers to be 'part of the group'.

Since Darmani is a relatively decent level Pokémon, he can tolerate water fairly well. Darmani is not really aware of how strong he is, so he'll often go too far in battles without realizing it. Especially when Darmani uses the move Roll Out he can sometimes get carried away, because he can't see anything at all and he usually can't hear his trainer's orders over his own rumbling.

Trivia: Darmani is named after the dead Goron hero in the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, who's mask Link eventually receives.
