Name: Sandy Gano
Age: 21 years
Occupation: Pokémon trainer and former champion of the Kanto region
Battle style: Experienced, yet accidentally destructive
Hometown: Cerulean City, Kanto
Hair color: White
Eye color: Blue
First appearance: Page 1
|
Current team: (Sandy has other Pokémon in reserve...)
|
Sandy Gano became the regional Kanto champion five years ago. Although she was always known for her
great enthusiasm for battling, she failed to show up a year later to defend her title. Her challenger won
the match by default and became the new champion, however the entire country wondered why the former champ
did not come to fight in the League that year. Consequently many fans became very disappointed; some to a
very extreme point.
As a result it's not safe for Sandy to show her face in some large cities, especially if they have Pokémon
fan clubs. That's why she usually wears a big straw hat to hide her face (she probably doesn't realize that
it's her white hair and not her face that keeps giving her away).
Although she is a powerful trainer, years of not battling have taken their toll on most of her Pokémon's
fighting abilities. Their levels may not have decreased, but their stamina and fighting spirit sometimes leave
to be desired for... Sandy herself tends to be complacent if she battles (which is rarely), because she still
expects to win rather easily. But if at all possible, she will avoid fighting altogether. She has come to
dislike Pokémon battles and the League in general. Apparently she doesn't have very fond memories of her time
as a champ.
While she is usually quiet and withdrawn, sometimes even melancholy, she will open up and even become
cheerful when she's around what few friends she has.
Trivia: Whenever I play a Pokémon game, I tend to call my character 'Sandy', although I'm not sure
why. That said, the Sandy from Stuff of Legend is not really supposed to be me. Our personalities don't
exactly match.

Solaris is the first Pokémon Sandy ever owned. As her starter, Solaris, or 'Solly' as Sandy likes to call
him, is devoted to his trainer. He is a very powerful Pokémon, but he rarely makes use of this power when not
in combat. He is not easily provoked to fight, due to his laid back, relaxed nature. Solaris prefers to just
lead a peaceful life and to spend his time sleeping.
However, as a former champion's main Pokémon, battling is a just part of life. Although he doesn't like it,
Solaris will fight when necessary. He can be quite ruthless against opponents if he thinks they are abusing
their power against weaker creatures. He generally thinks smaller Pokémon are cute, and will have a hard time
fighting one. This may be because they remind him of himself, back when he used to be an easily intimidated
little Torchic.
Trivia: Solaris was my Sapphire starter, and is level 100. His in-game power isn't anywhere near as
impressive as those of his SoL counterpart (who is also been dubbed "Cluck Norris" by some readers).

Tarim is the first Pokémon Sandy caught, and has been on her team ever since. He is quite a sassy cat, and
enjoys proving his worth in battles. This cat hates to lose. He is also a bit of a flirt, and presumably has
quite a lot of offspring already. Tarim is definitely proud of his rebellious image and will fight to preserve
it as best he can.
However, this boisterous exterior belies his true nature. Tarim is actually the weakest member of the current
team, and he is well aware of this, even though he would never admit it. He tries to compensate for his relative
weakness, by having a bad-ass attitude. He fights more battles than any of Sandy's other Pokémon, to make up for
his inferiority complex. Deep down he is afraid that one day he may be replaced by a stronger Pokémon, although
Sandy has never removed him from the team in the past.
Trivia: When Tarim evolved, he retained his Meowth whiskers. He is also one of only two of Sandy's Pokémon, who
knows how to read. The other Pokémon is Candy. Tarim is also based on a Pokémon I own in the games.

Sandy obtained Aiko as a young Eevee. She used to be the baby of the team, but when she evolved, her power and
speed increased dramatically. She is now one of Sandy's main powerhouses (much to Tarim's displeasure). She isn't
aware of how strong she is, and will frequently use way too much power when she fights, which is rather
unfortunate for her foes. Aiko's experiences in battles have made her somewhat more mature, but she still enjoys
to play a lot.
Aiko also isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. How much of this can be attributed to being young and puppyish,
rather than being the result of lesser brain capacity, is uncertain. What is known is that she regards Tarim as
her big brother. So much so, in fact, that she will sometimes behave more like a feline than a canine (she'll even
try to meow).
Trivia: Aiko's fur is usually soft and flowing, but when she channels electricity through her body, her fur
will stand up in sharp spikes.
This character is also based on a Pokémon I own.

Candy is one of Sandy's main damage-dealing Pokémon. While Hypnos are not often used by the more serious
trainers, Candy has proven herself to be a competent battler and a reliable addition to the team. In battle,
Candy prefers to stand back and avoid taking hits from her opponents, while blasting them back hard. Her
tactics are considerably more direct than those of the rest of her kin. Hypnos are typically known for
their tricky battle styles; they tend to want to confuse, poison or hypnotize their enemies, rather than
taking them head-on.
Soon after capturing Candy as a Drowzee, Sandy realized that her new Pokémon preferred a more straight-forward
approach and she continued to train the psychic-type to suit these preferences. As a result, enemy trainers
are often surprised by the tactics used by this Hypno. Her approach to battle tends to shellshock most
opponents.
Because she doesn't hypnotize her opponents, Candy has little use for her pendulum, which is an item all
Hypnos have. For lack of a better purpose, Candy wears hers as a necklace.
Outside of battle, Candy is a fairly friendly Pokémon, who has taken on quite a lot of her trainer's personality
traits. She can be kind, confident and sometimes even silly. If pushed the wrong way, she can also develop a bit
of a mean side. She and Sandy share an unconscious psychic bond. It is not enough for them to communicate through,
but it does make them more in tune to each other's emotions. They can even sense each other's presence within a
reasonable distance. Neither of them are aware of this bond.
Candy has problems with her self-esteem, which stem from her time as a round little Drowzee. As a result, she
thinks she is unattractive, even now that she's evolved. The shiny has also developed a rather intense jealousy
towards overly feminine looking Pokémon, such as Gardevoir and Lopunny.
Trivia: I took quite a few artistic liberties with the design of this character, the most prominent of
which is the inclusion of breasts. I did that because she belongs to the "Human-shape" egg group.
Candy was one of the many shinies I used to own on my old Pokémon Silver game. She was one of the few I caught in
the wild (I hatched most of the others). For a Hypno, she was extremely reliable in battles. Unfortunately Candy
got deleted when my Silver game crashed.

Fang, the Scyther, was the last Pokémon to be added to Sandy's team. His full name is Fang Sca, and Sandy got
him in a trade from someone in the Orre region. Unlike all her other Pokémon, Fang does not have a happy,
cheerful personality. Compared to Fang, even Tarim is a total sweetheart. Just like all other Scythers, Fang
is a very competent fighter, but unlike his brethren he does not see combat as an honorable enterprise, but
as a life or death type of deal. He will typically strike to kill, even in a friendly sparring match. Fang
used to have trouble following orders and in the past he did almost kill some of his opponents. Sandy has him
under reasonable control now, but still prefers not to use him for matches. Her main reason for keeping him
on her team, is that she wants to keep an eye on him.
Fang's personality is a bit of an enigma. At first glance he appears to be a bit of a psycho who hates everybody.
However, if you leave him alone, he'll leave you alone too. Fang won't go out of his way to start trouble.
He has also displayed some leadership skills in the past, meaning there is a lot more going on in that head of
his, than just murderous thoughts. It would seem that his number one priority in life is to make sure he is
always close to his trainer. Perhaps he realizes that she can keep him in check, but regardless of who he is with,
he is always an angry blade-wielding bug, who should not be taken for granted.
This Pokémon is partly responsible for why Sandy's championship fight almost went disastrously wrong...
Trivia: Fang has a strange cross-shaped scar on his back, which he had since before he was traded to Sandy.
He is also quite fearful of ever evolving.
This character is also based on a Pokémon I own.

Quartz is Sandy's main tank. Not much is known about this Pokémon, due to the fact that he seems to spend most
of his time asleep. What is known is that he is friendly, relaxed and rather gentle. He likes to snuggle with
his trainer (a bit too much for comfort) and also enjoys the company of his team mates. He will fight if he must
(and if you can wake him up). He is perhaps even more laid back than Solaris.
Two years after she first became a Pokémon trainer, Sandy received an egg from a Pokémon breeder who seemed to
have a huge surplus. The egg was unusually heavy and the girl was unable to transport it outside of a pokéball.
The reason for the egg's massive weight became apparent when it hatched and the newborn turned out to be an
Onix.
Sandy named him Quartz and decided to keep him on her team. Unlike Aiko, this Onix displayed very few baby-like
tendencies other than sleeping a lot and liking to cuddle. He was quite mature right from the start. Quartz turned
out to be a great tank, but due to his bulk and slowness it is a difficult Pokémon to train. This seems to be one
of the reasons why Sandy doesn't use Quartz in battles too often anymore. Another reason would be his tendency to
fall asleep in the middle of a battle. This strange quirk has earned Quartz the nickname 'The Iron Snorlax'.
When Sandy entered the Pokémon League, Quartz was still an Onix. He evolved shortly after she became the national
champion. Although Quartz is far from unbeatable, his high level has given him the ability to tolerate attacks
he's supposed to be vulnerable to fairly well. This is also the reason why Sandy can wash the giant snake with
moderate amounts of water (one of the natural weaknesses of all Steelix), without causing enough damage to wake
him up.
Trivia: And yes, this character is also based on a Pokémon of mine.
