Having just about run out of stuff to do for Algere, I figured it was about time I kept a promised I made to Maximash, which was to redesign his cat-deer creature. The original creature was a cat, which looked a lot like a deer, so it could fool real deer into letting it come close enough to kill them with its poisonous bite. The creature was a bit of a chimera, though, hence the redesign.

I liked the idea of having a predator walk among its prey, but I tweaked it a little. The creature doesn't live among the deer, but does look, smell and move like them. When it hunts deer, it walks up to them casually, although most deer will see through its attempts to behave deer-like. So then it storms at a herd, sending the deer to scatter in panic. In the confusion it becomes hard for the deer to distinguish the predator from its fellow deer, and that's when the cat-deer kills the deer. It isn't poisonous. It's just very, very fast; it trips the deer and then kills it with a throat-bite. Its hunting strategy is very successful, but has a pretty serious disadvantage. Other, stronger predators may attack it, and even kill and eat it.

I also made another predator which misleads its prey; a snake-deer thing. It is about the size of an anaconda, and it has a tail shaped like a resting deer. The snake intends to lure in predators, tricking them into thinking they'll have an easy meal. But then they end up being eaten themselves. The snake usually targets mid-size predators, like wolves (and Icars), but there have been reports of large snakes with the remains of bears in their stomachs... Dislocating jaws allow it to swallow very large animals whole.
